Crossing the Mississippi (10 June)



Today was challenging in many respects. We were all concerned for Mike Sheskey, who had had a bad fall the day before and was in intensive care at Columbia Hospital. Fortunately, the report this evening was somewhat reassuring and he is in very good hands. We had just had dinner with Mike the evening before and this usually reserved fellow was gregarious in his own quiet way. He will be in our thoughts for days to come and we wish him and his family a quick recovery.
As can be seen from the photos, the weather was rather precarious and most of the riders got drenched somewhere along the route. This meant cleaning the bicycles as soon as they arrived at the hotel. However, these weather conditions also made for wonderful photos.

After cleaning up and getting organized, Emil and I made a brief but interesting visit at the Quincy museum, which is actually a wonderful mansion with restored rooms and an interesting exhibition of Motorola radios, which were produced here. I was delighted to meet a record album of Jimmy Dorsey and his band... the exact same one I'd had as a teenager playing in the Sir Francis Drake High School Band!

    Great reporting Eve! Keep Emil safe, we don’t want the mountain goat ending up in the hospital, like Mike. (Also hope that Mike makes a speedy recovery).

In the MOOd Singing in the Rain (28 June) The last 90 miles, only 90 miles of 3,404 miles,  just the last little teeny bit and through lovely countryside and three states...and it is pouring rain, relentlessly! Talking about important people (11 June) It's time to talk about someone who is very important to the well-being of the Cross Roads riders: Tom. From dawn until after dusk he and the rest of the staff are busy stocking the SAG vehicles, setting up SAG stops, making sure all rooms are ready as soon as possible, transporting duffle bags to said rooms, organizing dinners and completing a myriad of other tasks, all pretty much out of sight of the riders. And he does all this without losing his sense of humor! Today the riders had a long stint of over 100 mi. to ride. Pleasant temperatures  and a moderate headwind made riding quite enjoyable. I did my stint in the fitness room and pool, and then headed toward Springfield, where I intended to meet another very important person: Abraham Lincoln. With cheers and rain and flats again (23 June) The spirit and determination with which the CrossRoads riders cover mile after mile, spiting heat, rain, wind and those aggravating flat tires, is a continual source of amazement and admiration. Today they crossed the 3,000 mile mark, with "only" a little over 400 miles more to go. As I was waiting for the group to arrive at the second SAG in Avon, I met this distinguished group of riders (Delaney, Harrison, Charlotte and Reed) and their father. They were so excited about the idea of seeing our CrossRoads group that they stayed for the first arrivals, practising the Swiss chant used to fire on profi racers "hup, hup, hup". And then the big moment as Pete crested the hill and was enthusiastically supported by our cheerleading group.
